The Los Angeles-based California Endowment has announced a two-year, $1 million grant to Hmong Health Collaborative, which works to improve access to culturally appropriate healthcare services for the Hmong communities in Sacramento, Fresno, Merced, and San Joaquin counties.
The grant will be used to help the ten member groups improve the health and well-being of the Central Valley's Hmong community by increasing their involvement in health policy advocacy, community organizing, and cross-cultural exchange and by providing education programs designed to create a greater understanding of the Hmong community's healthcare needs among the region's healthcare providers and systems.
In 2004, the endowment awarded grants to the same ten organizations for the Hmong Resettlement Health Project to address the immediate health needs of newly arriving Hmong refugees, and it provided subsequent funding in 2006 so that the organizations — including the Fresno Center for New Americans, the Merced Lao Family Community Inc., and the Southeast Asian Assistance Center — could develop the collaborative and engage in health advocacy training and community organizing to mobilize the community to advocate for improved delivery of culturally appropriate health services.
"What began four years ago as a project to address the immediate health needs of newly arrived Hmong refugees has transformed into a dynamic and robust region-wide health advocacy collaborative," said endowment president and CEO Dr. Robert K. Ross. "These organizations are to be commended not only for the critical services they provide, but also for taking the brave leap into health policy advocacy and engaging healthcare providers and health systems to improve access to culturally appropriate health services for the Hmong communities throughout Central California."
