National Policy Summit on the
Elimination of Disparities in Mental Health Care
Summary Report
Background
Individuals comprising specific racial and ethnic groups are the fastest growing portions of the U.S. population. About one in three residents of the United State now self-identify as African- American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian/Pacific American, or Latino (Kaiser 2008). According to two recent reports, the nation will be older and more racially and ethnically diverse by 2050 (Institute of Medicine, 2008; U.S. Census Bureau, 2008). However, there remain persistent racial/ethnic disparities in health and mental health status, health insurance coverage, and access to quality health and mental health care. There is no doubt that these facts will have a dramatic effect on the utilization of health-related services throughout the nation in the future (Institute of Medicine, 2008).
